Rihanna is know for her tough-luxe style, but the ‘Rude Boy’ singer’s latest vid really pushes the envelope. S&M, her latest single, sees her turn up the heat and the controversy with a range of out-there outfits. In one scene the Barbadian singer take celeb blogger Perez Hilton out on a leash!
The controversy has definitely worked, as the video has been banned in 12 countries, what do you think of Rihanna’s vid? Watch it below and let us know!
Hotly tipped R’n'B singer winner Jessie J has divided opinions across the blogosphere, even more so now that she’s won the BBC Sound of 2011 poll.
The Essex-born singer packs a punch with her single ‘Do It Like A Dude’, a fearsome tune about being just as tough as one of the guys. Love her or hate her, check out the acoustic version which showcases her impressively gorgeous voice, it’s definitely one you’ll want to put on repeat!
Trend scout Susie Draffan gives us a cheat’s guide to Stevie Nicks her periennal favourite fashion muse, who has been influencing designers left right and centre for SS11:
If Spring/Summer 11 is all about the ’70s, then its muse is surely Stevie Nicks, the tiny blonde with the big voice who fronted Fleetwood Mac, and was one of the decade’s most famous women. The band enjoyed worldwide success in an era when rock stars were gods, and were as notorious for their inter-band relationships, affairs, feuds and legendary rock’n'roll excess as well as their music.
Stevie’s influence is all over the spring/summer catwalks, from the gypsy tops and dresses at Fendi and Marc Jacobs, to the floaty maxi dresses at Pucci. Kimono sleeve tops, another favourite of the singer, are also a key piece for the season. Wide leg jeans seen at Derek Lam and Rebecca Taylor are pure Stevie, and the new midi skirt length is another way to channel the rock goddess.
Stevie’s on stage look relied heavily on long chiffon layers and scarves to wear and twirl, which is happy coincidence because sheer is one of the biggest fabric directions for spring/summer and scarves, from head scarves to turbans, are making a come back.
In the 80s Stevie went on to forge a successful solo career, but reunited with Fleetwood Mac in the 90s and the band still tour today, selling out stadiums around the world. If you’ve not heard of them, raid your parent’s record collection, or maybe your grandparents record collection. In the meantime, check out this clip of her singing backstage on a Rolling Stone shoot from 1981. Simply. Awesome.
Some people are so cool it makes us depressed. Eva Spence is not only the singer in the incredible noise-metal band Rolo Tomassi, she also runs her own clothing and accessories company, Night Of The Living Thread, and charted at number 60 in this year’s NME Cool List. But of course, the coolest achievement of all has to be working in New Look Sheffield before the band took off!
You’d think all this being cool would take up her time, but she still found a few minutes to share with us some of her top style tips for being on tour, and sharing some of the secrets of how she balances being in a band with running her own fashion company…
You work in both music and crafts/fashion. Have you always been creative and interested in different forms of arts, or did one come first?
I’d always been interested in forms of art, at school although I worked very hard in more academic subjects I always found being creative came easier to me. It’s much easier to know you like to draw than develop a music taste when you’re younger so I guess crafts and fashion came first without really thinking about it but both tastes developed early in my teens when I started finding myself.

We have to admit when we heard Will Smith’s 9 year old daughter Willow was starting a career in music we weren’t exactly convinced. One view of the new video had us completely converted, not only can Willow sing, dance and give good ‘tude she’s also only nine years old! On top of that she’s whipping us into shape trend-wise with her 3D nail art and amazing heart-shaped braids.
Watch the video for yourself here, and let us know what you think of the pint-sized popstar.

Hayley, our roving street styler and New Look designer went to check out the stylish folk at Offset festival last Sunday…
“Although the weather wasn’t great for the end of summer the fashion was! Grey and overcast the fashion forecast was strictly Autumn/Winter out with the old, in with the new! With some great bands playing we opted for the relative calm of the house tent whilst everyone else surrounded the main stage. I was pleased to see they also had a tent of vintage for sale, where we got a few nice pieces. Nothing like shopping as you rock!”
“Some of the big trends we spotted coming through at the festival were fringing, and rompers got an autumn makeover in denim. Jacket-wise it was all about soft, slouchy bombers and retro varsity jackets.”
“The teddy girl look (bottom) is going strong, keep seeing the deep sole/ brothel creepers coming through. I love the camel boyfriend jacket (middle row, right), worn with a velvet skirt and shirt, perfection! I’m still loving the military parka, and the mix of fur and suede top right is gorgeous.”
V Festival hit Hylands Park and Weston park last weekend, with a slew of celebs and popstars to bring a bit of glam to the UK’s festival circuit. Our festival spies hit the fields to check out what was going down in in the moshpit as well as in the VIP area!
We were fashionably late to Weston Park for our Weekend at V Festival, arriving on the Saturday. We decided to break the mould and journey all the way from London to Staffordshire to see how our northern counterparts were doing! Piled with way too many bags for a one night stay, we quickly rounded up some (kind of) willing helpers to assist us on our trip to the campsite.
Finally a festival that we can wear our wellies too! The weather was actually not too bad… but we so excited to put on our wellies…
As far as trends go V-festival we spotted the every popular flower garlands, high waisted denim shorts (and unfortunately too much cheek a lot of the time!) playsuits, trilby hats, knee high socks, band tees and head scarves.
We were ultra impressed by how friendly everyone was! Maybe we are too used to the London Fashion crowd…
V Festival has a perfect mix of music genres, we saw and LOVED Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding, Tinie Tempah, Kasabian, Pixie Lott, Calvin Harris AND David Guetta. Quote of the weekend was from David Guetta: “You are at the best party in the world right now!” Yes. We. Were!

Trend Scout Susie has been scoping out fashion trends in Sweden: Last weekend we went style hunting at the Way Out West festival in Gothenburg, which is one of Sweden’s largest music festivals. Taking place in a beautiful park in the centre of the city (which meant no tents, it was hotel beds and showers for us thankfully!) the 2 day event is a must for fashion and music fans, as it features a stellar line-up and is chock full of stylish Scandinavians. Our kind of place!
We managed to cram in seeing some of our favourite bands including Beach House, The XX, Mumford & Sons, The Drums, LCD Soundsystem (who were awesome!) and Lykke Li (girl crush alert!) around snapping some of the coolest looking beautiful people (everyone in Sweden is beautiful, it’s not a myth) we’ve ever seen.
The Swedish girls were loving the sheer look, layering up transparent shirts, dresses and tops. Also the midi skirt is definitely gaining pace. Animal prints were everywhere, in grey leopard mainly, while we were loving the 70s blue denim pieces, perfect for SS 11! And then, as if all that gorgeousness wasn’t enough to contend with, we spotted Kate Bosworth and Kirsten Dunst – double girl crush!
The Mercury Music prize is upon us again with a mix of best-selling, avant-garde and downright kooky music. We’ve had a chance to pore over the shortlist and we spotted a few artists who made us swoon an sway over the last year.
If you haven’t heard Mumford & Sons’ debut single ‘Little Lion Man’ then you must have been hiding in a hole somewhere! This has been the hit song of the summer and we love the Mumford’s country-tinged pop.
The XX are the indie vote, but their hit ‘Islands’ was covered by all and sundry at this year’s Glastonbury festival, which should help propel them into the mainstream. The four South London youngsters met at school where they perfected their dreamy R&B-influenced sound.
We’re big fans of Janelle Monae at New Look towers, the Atlanta-born pop princess is a legend in the making. Her new album ‘The Arch Android’ is released today and we can’t wait to have a listen. Her unique brand of infectious pop combines soul, funk and a bit of showtune drama for good measure, it’s just the thing to brighten up a dull Monday morning! Fancy a listen? Jump through to hear ‘Tightrope’, her new single.
