Jess and Beth are this week’s guest bloggers, bringing you the finest in vintage and retro ideas for your home.

We both love a bit of vintage, but at the moment we’re switching our focus (and finances) to making perfect homes to hide away from the winter weather.

As small children in the 80′s, shopping in charity shops, flea markets (please, just the name puts you off) jumble sales and antique markets with our mums was torture for a mini Jess and Beth but how getting older changes things. We now find we have morphed into our mothers and it doesn’t even worry us! Well, apart from the thought of the perm, stop us when we write about that being a good idea.

We would introduce you to our eclectic style and recent finds from eBay and our local charity shops, and give you a few places to search about if you’re just getting started!

London

Crouch End
– various great charity shops and lots of wealthy homeowners giving goodies away. Bric a brac central and also a great Oxfam book store.
Past Caring – 54 Essex Road, Islington
Kingston Antique Centre, 29 Old London Road, Kingston Surrey. Great antique and flea market for niknaks, old furniture, costume jewelery and even a Polish Cafe
Holloway road, various establishments selling furniture to kitsch things you never knew you wanted (pineapple ice bucket spring to mind here!) stretch between Highbury and Islington Station and Holloway Road Tube
Aladdin’s Cave, Crouch End/Finsbury Park 1 Hazellville Road – great for furniture, hidden away so not much through traffic great for hidden gems

Further afield

Newbury, lots of little old lady charity shops and everything is a bargain (they are yet to realise what people will actually spend when they like something!). Tea set complete with cups, saucers and side plates, £3.75. I had to check the price!
Lewes, Sussex – Lewes Flea Market, 14A Market St
Brighton, Sussex – Snoopers Paradise, 7-8 Kensington Gardens. Everything and anything. Quite a bit of new toot you don’t need but also great for old postcards, pictures, anything and everything small and large.

Where are your favourite vintage spots for scoring sweet retro homewares? Leave a comment and let us know!

Bethany from Best Coast is our new musical crush; with a cat called Mr Snacks, a penchant for ’60s girl groups and a laid-back sound that is just perfect for the end of the summer, we’re definitely in love! Best Coast were formed after Bethany left NYC to return to her native California, and the album definitely has the slacker surfer vibe of the area. It’s the kind of music that makes up want to spend all day at the beach, or run off on a road trip.

We defy you not to sway dreamily to these tunes, jump through to have a listen!

Students

We remember what it’s like being a student. Living in teeny tiny little rooms, eating beans on toast 5 nights a week, studying all the time and not having any money to buy clothes….

Well, actually, we may be slightly over exaggerating… OK we’re severely over exaggerating! We asked the peeps at New Look HQ what their spending like was as a student, and funnily enough they all agreed that they always kept some money aside for CLOTHES! We know how important clothes are even when you’re living on a budget which is why we’ve extended our Student Discount. You can get 20% OFF until 17th May, and what’s more we have an AMAZING competition where you could win a new wardrobe every term!

Visit our Facebook Student page to check out how to win, and you could be in with a chance to have an endless supply of New Look togs!

We’re blogging and tweeting from a secret underground bunker at New Look HQ (ok, it’s one of our meeting rooms!) covering the New Look Press Day as all the VIP journalist and bloggers arrive.

lou press prom

Louisa, the mastermind behind ToTheProm.com, has kindly spilled the beans on all her secrets for looking prom-ready and perfect! Read on to find out what she told us:

Just like our favourite Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen, we all want to show that little bit of individuality and this doesn’t have to stop with Prom. One of the coolest looks right now is customisation.
The credit crunch might have put a squeeze on the purse strings but adding your own touch has become the new cool, and can be done in many cheap & easy ways!

Here are our top 3 ideas for Customisation Cool:

Add a piece of netting (available from all good haberdashers) to a simple hair clip et voila! Your very own vintage inspired fascinator.

Anything goes with ribbons & bows so let’s get sewing! A contrasting Ribbon around the middle of your dress, or simple bows sewed to the straps will transform your frock into something unique and and all for only a few pounds.

Socks & Sandals, once the preserve of dads on the beach and nerdy tourists, this year the look was all over the catwalks and got picked up by celebrities on both sides of the pond. But remember it’s dainty pastels sockettes and peep toes we’re going for here not sports socks and tan lines!

Floral prom dress in red, white or black: £30.

sartorialist bicycle

Spring is here and we want to get out and get on our bikes, the idea of cycling to work on a sunny day sounds fantastic. It may or may not have something to do with shifting all that winter comfort food, but cycling has become a chic pursuit. The Sartorialist is well-known for his cycle love, documenting stylish riders the world around.

We’re still relying on hand-me-down pushbikes but if you really want to do cycling in style then you treat yourself to a bike from Bobbin, our favourite bicycle shop. Not only do they know their stuff but they do it with panache, and we love the little descriptions that accompany their products: ‘If this bike were food, it would be gelato in a sugar cone.

pashley metropole bicycle

The classic Pashley in pink is a must for all cycle princesses, or why not go for bright yellow, this season’s on-trend colour? It will look great with summer’s sandy neutrals to make sure you cycle in style!

coachella 2

Festival season kicks off today with Coachella, the US festival that’s fast becoming a favourite with celebs and rock groupies. The three-day bash boasts Brit Talent Florence and The Machine, as well as Victoria Hesketh, better known as Little Boots. Gorillaz are also set to perform, as well as the likes of Jay-Z, Passion Pit and The Temper Trap. Our Trend scout Susie is at the festival, armed with her camera and scoping out all the hot festival fashion sported by the cool people of California, check out her awesome pics below!

We’re used to seeing Kelly Cutrone taking no prisoners on her reality show ‘Kell on Earth’, but here we see a softer side to the PR guru and Hills star as she goes through the pieces in her daughter’s closet.

Little Ava is unbelievably cute, our favourite bit is when she rolls her eyes and says ‘Mommy! Diesel is NOT Rock’n'Roll, it’s cool!’ She ‘s probably the only person in the world who can backchat Kelly!
