Grey hair

Have you noticed a strange but weirdly fascinating hair trend emerging from the catwalks and on the streets? We have been watching with fascination for a while now as more and more of our more fashion forward friends have been adding stranger and stranger colours to their hair. Then last week at the Elle Style Awards, Pixie Geldolf turned up with grey hair and it was official, grey is the new blonde!!

The secret to rocking this trend however is that you must be young and have no signs of natural grey hair. This look is all about the fake, so the addition of a pink, blue or purple rinse is the ultimate in uber cool.

What do you think, is this a super hot look or is it hideous and we could end up looking like our great aunt Ethel on a bad day!!

We have always been big fans of the weird and wonderful Tim Burton’s work, and his latest film, Alice in Wonderland due for release on the 5th of March in the UK, looks like it certainly won’t disappoint. Starring, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway, this epic 3D fantasy adventure is not only a great story it is also a visual feast, with amazing sets and incredible costumes.

And check out that make up, does it look a little bit Luella S/S 2010 to you?

There is also a retrospective of Tim Burton’s work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which is well worth checking out if you are lucky enough to be in the Big Apple in the next couple of months.

Red Hair

There is nothing like a new hairstyle or colour to update your look. Personally we are loving the amazing Miss Holloways (from US tv series Mad Men) bright red hair and are seriously considering going all out for orange.

We have also been taking a look at some of the key hair trends from the Spring/Summer catwalk shows and our favourite blogs to bring you a round up of the best hair ‘do’s for 2010.

Side plait

Fashionising.com has put together a great overview of the key trends for the season, with the most important one being the side plait. We think it looks super cute. This new take on the pony tail is sophisticated yet feminine and can be worn messy or sleek. It must be worn with a side parting and the plait should always be on the opposite side to the parting.

The topknot

We are still loving the top knot. A look that has been around for a little while, the newest way to wear your jaunty bun is twisted round into a tight neat sculptural knot or huge and messy (a bit like a birds nest) a la January Jones (Betty Draper in Mad Men).

Marc Jacobs S/S 2010 catwalk collection featured top knots with a twist, literally!
We so feel a scrunchie revival coming.

Wah nails

Here at NL Towers we know we have got our look right when someone tells us we are “Swagger on point.” WTH does that mean? I hear you say.
Well ‘Swagger on Point’ is street slang for when you are TOYG (top of your Game) and everything about your style is bang on. To be ‘SOP’, you also have to have the right attitude, Your clothes could be right, but you also have to be confident, its a head to toe thing and attention to detail is key.

Over the next few weeks we will be putting together some mood boards to help you to achieve your very own style Nirvana.

First off, it’s all about the nails (have we mentioned we love nail art!!) and here are some ideas from our all times favourite nail blogs WAH and Sophy Robson.

Sophy Robson nails

Pretty pastels are big news for Spring Summer and we are looking forward to getting our hands on some of the super cute colours we saw at the New Look press days. Cupcake and Cowboy Crinoline were two of our favourites, as we adore the soft fondant tones mixed with black and denim.

We are also loving the pastel dresses the Sugababes (complete with new ‘babe’, Jade Ewen), are wearing in their new video. The song, Wear My Kiss, isnt half bad too. It’s out on Feb the 14th.

tonal nails

For us, new clothes mean new make up too, as it’s important to get the whole look right. We are becoming slightly obsessive when it comes to our nails and are constantly on the look out for new looks. We just love this idea on Sophy Robsons blog, where she has used a different gorgeous tonal pastel shade on each nail.

If you don’t want to buy loads of new colours, why not try buying white and doing a bit of mixing. Or if you are are really good at D.I.Y, you could try two tonal colours on each nail.

Alicia Keys at the AMA's

Alicia Keys completely stole the show in her Armani Privé dress at the American Music Awards earlier this week. But it was her pretty pastel make up and elaborate ‘do’, that the hair and beauty bloggers loved. We have seen lots of great plaited hairstyles around recently and although they require a lot of work, we think it’s worth it. Doesn’t she look totally gorgeous?

Look out for Alicia on this Sundays X Factor, where she will perform Doesn’t Mean Anything from her new album The Element of Freedom.
Just when you thought Sunday nights couldn’t get any better!

Lashes

Katie Price admits to wearing several pairs at once, Girls Aloud have their own range and now you can even buy a pair of Barbie (perhaps our very first introduction to glamour) luscious double layer lashes. It seems adding a pair of false eyelashes has become an essential part of any self respecting glamour girls party outfit.

Agyness Deyn was spotted at the Ace Awards in NYC last week, sporting a pair of OTT lashes which look more than a little inspired by the original supermodel and fan of the wide eyed look, Twiggy. Aggie applied the lashes to the bottom of her eyes rather than the top, for a new take on lash lovliness. Something we also saw at the S/S 2010 YSL and Mui Mui catwalk shows.

Hair and make up are often the simplest and most effective way to create a truly fabulous Halloween outfit and can often require the least effort. Some of our favourite ideas have come from the Spring Summer 2010 catwalk shows.

We love the idea of a giant ‘fro’, like the amazing OTT do’s shown on the catwalk at Louis Vuitton. Wear all black, add a huge bow and some OTT make up to rock the ‘super fro’ hairtastic look.

Fantasy fawnImages from style.com

Alexander McQueen’s Spring Summer catwalk collection was inspired by reptiles, insects and sea creatures. The hair and make up was a touch creepy and other worldy and perfect inspiration for a glam/reptilian/fantasy/Mr Timnus look.

We think John Galliano’s S/S 2010 show was more than a little inspired by glam 80′s clubbers the Blitz kids (well John was one, wasn’t he?) This look requires a lot of hairspray and make up, but is well worth the effort. Take a look at the Blitz Kids website for some more ideas.

Superbrights

Finally the super bright not so subtle make up from Luella could also inspire a freaky slightly surreal look. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Leigh Bowery!!

Bws

We have to admit Kandy Rain were not our favourites in the live X Factor shows at the weekend. But we did love their Lady Gaga inspired hair bows. And it seems our favourite celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is rocking the look too!! Not sure we'd want our BF's in bows though!

What do you think?

Call us Goths, but we love these nails. With the imminent release of the second film in the Twilight series New Moon, we are feeling a vampish look coming on, so will be trying out this look over the weekend.

Just how gorgeous are Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

New Moon is released in the UK on the 24th of November. We can't wait.
